The Desires of Your Heart

“The Desires of Your Heart”

Good morning My Ekklesia Family

“May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed.”

—Psalm 20:4 (NIV)

Psalm 20 is a royal psalm—often spoken as a blessing over someone preparing for a great task. In verse 4, King David prays that God would not only hear the desires of a faithful heart, but also grant them and bring success to the plans birthed from those desires.

But this verse is often misunderstood. This is not a blanket promise that anything you want, God will automatically give. In the Hebrew, the word for "desires" (mish'alah) implies requests shaped by devotion and covenant. God doesn’t promise to fulfill every flesh-born wish—He promises to fulfill every faith-born desire.

Now compare this with Psalm 37:4 (NLT):

“Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires.”

Here’s the key: When you delight in the Lord, your heart begins to beat in rhythm with His. He gives you desires that reflect His goodness, timing, and purpose for your life.

1. Check the Source of Your Desires

Are your desires rooted in pride, comparison, or culture? Or are they anchored in purpose, peace, and kingdom calling?

Ask yourself: Is what I want aligned with what God wants for me?

2. Delight Comes Before Desire

Prioritize delighting in God's presence over pursuing results. Desires shaped in devotion become promises God fulfills.

Practical Tip: Begin each day with 10 minutes of worship and thanksgiving before asking God for anything.

3. Make Room for the Blessing

Start living like the desire is already on its way. If you want God to bless it—start preparing to receive it.

Example: Want a new job? Update your résumé. Praying for healing? Start speaking health over your body daily.

4. Pray in Agreement With God’s Will

Shift your prayers from “God, give me what I want” to “God, shape me until what I want is what You want.”

Prayer Practice: Write down your top 3 desires and then surrender each in prayer, saying, “Nevertheless, not my will but Yours be done.”

Father Yahweh, Elohim of my heart’s deepest places,

I thank You for caring not just about what I need, but about what I desire. I surrender every longing to You today. Shape me until I want what You want for me. Breathe on my vision. Sanctify my dreams. Let every prayer I speak come from a place of alignment, not anxiety. I trust You not just to give me what I ask, but to prepare me for what You’ve already promised. I believe that if it’s from You—it will come. I am ready, I am willing, and I am open.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

Do you want your heart’s desires to be shaped by Heaven’s design? That begins with a relationship with Jesus Christ. If you don’t know Him, or if you’ve wandered, today is your day to return to the One who writes your destiny.
