"In Order to Trust, You Have to Get Out of the Boat"
Matthew 14:28–29 NLT
[28] Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.”
[29] “Yes, come,” Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus.
A boat feels safe — it’s familiar, predictable, and solid. But the miracle Peter experienced didn’t happen in the boat. It happened on the water. The storm didn’t stop, but the invitation still came.
Peter’s request was bold: “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come.” His faith required action, and that action required leaving the comfort of what he knew. Trust in Jesus always pulls us beyond what is comfortable into what is possible only with Him.
The boat represents the comfort zones, excuses, and security blankets we cling to. Getting out of the boat means:
Letting go of control.
Releasing the familiar.
Moving toward Jesus even when conditions don’t seem favorable.
Practical Life-Changing Application
Let Go: Identify one thing you’ve been holding onto that’s keeping you from fully trusting God.
Release: Commit to releasing the fear of “what if” and walk toward what God has promised.
Step Out: Take one faith step this week — in prayer, in ministry, in obedience — that requires God to show up.
Prayer of Encouragement
Lord Jesus, I hear You calling me to come. I let go of the fear, the doubt, and the comfort zones that have kept me still. I trust that if You’ve called me to step out, You will hold me up. Strengthen my faith to keep my eyes on You, no matter the wind or the waves. In Your name, Amen.
Invitation to Christian Discipleship
If you’ve been sitting in the boat, today is your day to step out. Jesus is calling. He’s not promising calm seas, but He is promising His presence — and that’s all you need. Trust Him with your life, your future, and your eternity. Accept Him as Lord and Savior today, and discover that the water can hold you up when your eyes are on Him.
