Serve Before You Suffer

“Everybody wants to lead… but nobody wants to serve.”
Jesus knew He was about to die…and instead of demanding honor—He picked up a towel.
Not a crown. Not a title. Not a platform.
A towel.
Because in the Kingdom…authority is proven through humility.
You don’t qualify to lead by how many people follow you—but by how willing you are to serve them.
And here’s the real question:
Can God trust you to serve… before He lets you lead?
True authority in the Kingdom is revealed through humility, not position.
John 13:3–5 (NLT)
Luke 22:19–20 (NLT)
On the night before His crucifixion, Jesus gathers with His disciples for what would be His final meal. In a moment that defies cultural norms, He rises from the table, wraps a towel around His waist, and begins washing their feet.
In first-century Jewish culture, foot washing was reserved for the lowest servant in the household. Yet Jesus—the Son of God, fully aware of His authority and divine identity—chooses to take the lowest position in the room.
Then He institutes Communion, breaking bread and sharing the cup, declaring that His body will be given and His blood shed. This moment connects service with sacrifice—humility with redemption.
Jesus had all authority—yet chose humility.
That confronts our culture—and even our church culture.
We live in a time where people want:
Titles without towels
Platforms without posture
Influence without sacrifice
But in the Kingdom of God, greatness doesn’t stand tall—it kneels low.
Jesus shows us:You don’t prove authority by how many people serve you…You prove it by how willing you are to serve others.
Humility is not weakness—it is alignment with God’s nature.
Before Jesus carried the cross… He carried a towel. Before He shed blood… He served others.
That order matters.
If you can’t serve, you’re not ready to lead.If you can’t humble yourself, you will mishandle authority.
Real leadership is not about visibility—it’s about responsibility.
So ask yourself honestly:
Who am I serving when nobody is watching?
Do I only serve when it benefits me?
Is my heart positioned for humility… or recognition?
Because God is not preparing you just for a position—He is preparing you for responsibility.
Father, break pride in me. Strip away the need for recognition and replace it with a heart to serve. Teach me to love like Jesus—selflessly, consistently, and humbly. Shape my character before You elevate my calling. Prepare me for what’s ahead by developing my heart now. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Follow Jesus not just in power—but in posture.
Walk with Him daily. Serve others intentionally.
Grow deeper in humility, obedience, and love.
Join us at Ekklesia Christian Life Ministries as we live this out together.
