Ekklesia Family.... There Is a Cost to Be with The Boss
Following Jesus requires daily surrender, not occasional agreement.
Matthew 16:24-27 NLT
[24] Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me.
[25] If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it.
[26] And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?
[27] For the Son of Man will come with his angels in the glory of his Father and will judge all people according to their deeds.
In the first-century Roman world, the cross was not symbolic—it was an instrument of death. When Jesus spoke these words, His listeners understood something we often sanitize: to take up your cross meant to embrace suffering, rejection, and even death.
This wasn’t motivational language. This was a call to die to self.
Not just physically—but spiritually, emotionally, and socially.
Jesus wasn’t recruiting fans. He was forming disciples.
Today, we live in a culture that wants the benefits of Jesus without the burden of obedience.
We want the crown—but not the cross.
We want influence—but not sacrifice.
But Jesus is still asking the same question:
“Are you willing to lose your life to find it?”
Comfort Christianity says: “Add Jesus to your life.”
True discipleship says: “Surrender your life to Jesus.”
You can’t follow Jesus and keep control.
One of you has to lead—and it’s not you.
There is a cost.
And the cost is you.
Your pride.
Your plans.
Your preferences.
But here’s the truth:
What you lose in surrender, you gain in purpose.
Today’s challenge:
Where are you holding back from full obedience?
What cross have you been avoiding?
Don’t just admire Jesus.
Follow Him.
Let's pray…
Father, in the name of Jesus,
I surrender what I’ve been holding onto.
Not my will—but Yours be done.
Give me the courage to take up my cross daily.
Strengthen me where I am weak.
Align my heart with Your purpose.
I choose obedience over comfort.
I choose truth over convenience.
I choose You over everything.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
Jesus is not asking for perfection—He’s asking for surrender.
If you’re ready to stop playing church and start following Christ:
Say yes to Him today
Walk in daily obedience
Grow with a community that will challenge and cover you
