Trusting Jesus for Who He Is, Not Just for What He Can Do
Text: John 6:26-29 (NLT)
> Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, you want to be with me because I fed you, not because you understood the miraculous signs... But don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man can give you.”
Imagine someone who only calls on you when they need money, help, or favors—but never just to spend time with you. How would that make you feel?
That’s how we often treat Jesus—interested in His hand but not His heart.
In John 6, after Jesus fed the 5,000, the crowd sought Him again—not to worship, but to receive more bread. Jesus, knowing their hearts, gently rebuked them. He shifted the focus from temporary provision to eternal relationship.
v.26 – They followed Him for what He did (miracles), not for who He was (Messiah).
v.27-29 – Jesus redirected their desires: seek eternal life, believe in the One God has sent.
This moment is a test of motives. Will we love Him when He says “Wait”? Will we worship when He doesn’t immediately perform?
1. Jesus is not a vending machine; He’s the Bread of Life.
Don’t chase miracles—chase the Messiah.
2. Faith matures when it endures silence.
Can you trust His presence even when His power seems paused?
3. Intimacy requires more than answered prayer—it requires surrendered hearts.
Seek His face before His hand.
4. Ask: Who is Jesus to you when He’s not doing anything "for" you?
Is He still worthy of praise when the doors don’t open?
“Lord Jesus, I confess that I’ve sometimes followed You more for what You do than for who You are. Teach me to seek Your presence, not just Your provision. I surrender my expectations and lean into relationship over results. Deepen my trust in You—not just as the miracle-worker, but as my Savior, Friend, and Lord. Amen.”
If you’re tired of chasing blessings and ready to embrace the Blesser, come.
If you want more than a miracle—if you want Messiah—say “Yes” to Him today.
He’s not just what you want—He is who you need.
Not just the Bread, but the Baker I crave,
Not just the healing, but the One who gave.
In storm or stillness, peace I will choose,
Not just what I gain, but the One I refuse to lose.
